Venezia: Anatomy of a Print

Venezia (12x16)
Venezia (12×16)

In 2014, upon graduation from the Ford School, a fellow graduate and I made our way to Italy for what could only be described Fordiemoon. It was two weeks of formaggio, cured meats, gelato, fritti misti, leather, and vino. It was loveliest time.

We ended our tour in Venezia. A place deftly imagined in Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities. Full of shadows, masks, quattrofoil, and Campari. In previous lives, it was also full of tequila. And then not full of tequila. Anyways.

My Fordiemoon travel companion gave me the excellent idea try blending the inks. Instead of applying a single color, I put white, black, green, and blue inks on the mixing board (aka a plastic plate) and tried to avoid overmixing when applying to the block. The result? Variation in the color, adding depth and a sense of lightness. Something I will definitely have to try again.

Do you like to drink Campari? Is the Peggy Guggenheim one of your favorite museums? Have you gotten so lost in Venezia that you couldn’t find that museum? Hit me up writetolayne @ gmail dot com.
